Chapter 01

The parts that fail when it is 100 degrees out

A Tri-Cities summer asks an air conditioner to run for hours at a time, and the cheap parts go first. The run capacitor helps the compressor and fan motor start, and when it weakens the unit hums, stalls or blows warm air. The contactor, the relay that switches the outdoor unit on, can also pit and stick after thousands of starts.

Other causes are slower. A condenser coil caked with dirt cannot shed heat, a failing condenser fan motor lets pressure climb, and a refrigerant leak leaves the system low on charge so the indoor coil freezes into a block of ice. From the couch each of these looks like the same complaint: the house is getting hot and the vents are not blowing cold.

How the repair goes, and why you hear the reason first

Total Quality Air repairs all brands and models, so the first step is the same whatever is sitting on the pad: confirm power, test the capacitor, and measure the amp draw on the compressor. Those readings tell Carlos whether the trouble is a cheap start part or something bigger, before anyone starts replacing things on a guess.

From there it is the coil and the condensate drain, then the refrigerant charge checked against the manufacturer's spec instead of topped up by feel. Nothing gets replaced until it has been explained in plain words. You get the flat-rate price up front, and if another contractor has quoted the same job in writing, Total Quality Air will beat it by 5%.

The shop sits at 619 N 3rd Ave in Pasco, and calls run across Kennewick and Richland as well. Weekend and after-hours emergency service is available by appointment, which matters when the heat hits on a Saturday, so ask when you call about availability. Call the office at (509) 205-1592. Chapter 03

After it is cooling again

A repaired unit lasts longer when the outdoor coil is clean going into warm weather. Pine needles, cottonwood fluff and leaves pack into a condenser faster than most people expect, and the compressor pays for it. Keep plants and debris back from the cabinet, and rinse the coil gently with a garden hose, never a pressure washer.

Watch the condensate drain too. When it clogs, water backs up, and the system can shut itself off or leak into the ceiling. A quick look at the drain line each month in summer, along with a fresh filter, handles most of what a homeowner can safely do.

Sometimes a repair is not the right answer. An old unit that needs a big, expensive part year after year is a replacement conversation, and Carlos will tell you so plainly. Bring any written proposal you have to the shop, and Total Quality Air will beat it by 5%.

"Carlos explains everything and he keeps doing our maintenance. This time our air conditioner unit needed a capacitor. He came the next day as it was very hot and had the part with him." Shirley Brooks, Google review.

The spring cooling check that keeps a repaired unit running is part of the maintenance program, and if one room stays hot while the rest of the house cools, the answer may be in the ducts.
